hayle...dunn de dun dun daaaaaaaa!

ok here it is the finished version..about time lol, just kiddin. a thoroughly enjoyable project and i learnt loads which is really important to me, i must say alot of trial and error was involved but ive got the basics done :D, plus it was nice to work with a group and everyone worked in the area where they enjoyed and their strengths lied.

ooh where to start, i think ill start of with one of my favourite shots within the movie.
the joys of modelling the planes, what i learnt from the animatic was that its better of to make everything seperately, e.g. wings, propella, body etc, thus making my job easier later on when it comes to texturing the planes. i think it took me a couple of hours to get the general shape and size right.

one of the harder parts of making a plane is to get the propella to rotate centrally in its current position at a speed which looks real enough to be spinning at high speed. this was tricky as to date ive not found an easier way, but knowing maya there will always be an easier way. what i tested was key framing the propella at 0 deg and then key framing say 10 frames later it at in multiples of 360 until i got a decent rotation and speed. unfortunately there was a limit at 7200 deg and then for some reason the roation speed reset back to like 360, after geting the right rotation its just a task of going to the dope sheet and telling it to repeat infinately.

the skies in the pictures was realatively simple too, just create a giant sphere around the whole scene to act as an atmosphere for the scene so to speak. i came across a few problems using a lambert though, mainly due to the fact that the sphere would still contain shadows on the surface, which i definately didnt want a dark stretch of shadow in the sky which did happen. until i found the surface shader option in which it removes the shadows from the object. and from the pictuer u can see its worked quite nicely in the shot.
i think lighting can really make a shot look good, and this is what i really wanted to learn. i find after lessons i generally dont remember half of it so i have to go back and try and just mess around untill i get the look i want, and i generally find i remember things better after doing it lots of times. and until this project i hadnt really touched lighting effects or texturing for that matter.

i found the light linking option to be a very very usefull tool same with object linking, this is very handy if you only want to light to hit only certain objects which i used alot in a few of the scenes.

in the project i did the majority of the modelling, which is something i enjoy alot i did some minor tweaking to other peoples work just to keep the look and standard consistent throughout the project, this occured with lighting and tecturing too, i took it on myself to texture and light the scenes because i knew slightly more than matt about them. i supose this is similar to an editor in a written magazine acting as an overseer to pick up on minor mistakes and just keeping things to a high standard.

the animations involving planes were all down to me, most generally swooping shots and such most relatively easy to animate, its just the minor movements which can make the differene between a good animation and an average one. i tried to find the best camera shots for the scenes too as we wanted to use lots of different shots to spice things up a little.

as you can see we used various shots like this underwing shot.

i really found making all the scenery/texturing and lighting very enjoyable and i really liked working with my group, we are all good friends and worked well together, at first i think there were some issues with just general comunication, but i think at the end we were working like a well oiled machine.
